As Thursday is now my day off I'm starting a new blog project in the run up to Christmas...
This is week one of my Blog Project 'Thank God For Thursdays!' where I will pick up to 4 crafter's and let you know about their businesses, which I will pick out of my own favourites to share with you all. Each of these crafters have beautiful pages so let me give you a quick background on each of them...

So it's cold outside and I'm swopping the flip flops for my UGGs, winter is finally on its way and that mean's theres a few months till Christmas. I know many of you are early Christmas shoppers so I've got some new stock made for our winter collection including vintage and floral style stockings..

Time flys by..

As this blog is about my life as well as business I thought I'd share my summer with you all...

With the whole of our summer flown by a lot has happened, unfortunately a lot of bad BUT a few good times thrown in there too. As many of you know we went on holiday in May, since coming back from our amazing time away a lot of bad news came our way. I took a lot of time away from Sweet Cotton Threads as everything was too hectic at home running backwards and forwards between looking for new homes and my Grandad ill in hospital, without keep orders up to date which I knew I couldn't juggle too. In the time we we're closed we had a family death and we moved! Two of the most stressful moments in our lives, both of which I had never experienced before. My Grandad passed away in early July from Cancer and then two weeks later we moved. I just want all our loyal like's and customers to know that I did have good reason for closing (I wish it was for spending the whole summer on a beach). I know a lot of people appreciate others honesty in situations like these. But everything is slowly getting back to 'normal' and we are settling in our new home!

I've been busy this week with sorting through my fabrics (properly) and took a few snaps along the way so you lovelies could see too!! I even made my poor boyfriend drive 2 hours back home so we could pick up yet more fabric last weekend... we arrived back home on Monday night with a car filled with food and washed + ironed clothes (thank you Mum and Dad!!), missing the fabrics for Christmas stock!! So we shall be taking another drive back up to Lincoln tomorrow to collect it all (I will remember this time haha) and then the Christmas sewing can begin!

2000 makes it competition time!

We finally reached 2000 likers.. and now we're nearly at 2100 within a few days of hitting our target :) Now time for a little competition!

I want you all to enter our competition by telling us how you would decorate your house for the Christmas season with Sweet Cotton Thread's items, if money was no object and you could have it exactly how you liked it- custom items an all!

As some of you may already know, I am indeed moving cities in order to go back to college in September, I'll try not to keep SCT's closed for too long but family life comes first as I know all of you understand. I'm going to be making our cushions and curtains (and the bedding if I get a chance!), so expect a mini house tour, where all my SCT goodies will be on display :)

I have been making lots of new items as well as being on the hunt for a new place to live! So for the past month we've been rather busy getting SCT's set up for the summer months! We're now taking lots of orders for bunting, a few snaps of the bunting..

Holidays and a general chit chat..

Nearly 6 weeks since my last blog definitely means I've been busy.. oh and had a pretty relaxing holiday too!! I was busy making orders and items right up until a few days before we left for our two week holiday away in the sun, which I'll be sharing photos of in a bit!
I'm getting slowly back into the daily routine and opened our order book again! Life has been a bit hectic these last few months with applying to college and getting ready to move so our holiday came at the right time and I hope you can all understand how it can be at times with running a business on top.

Union Jack and the Royal Wedding..

I wrote a new post isn't it? Life seems to go so fast and I really don't know where time has gone since I last posted properly.. I've been hit by a rush of orders the last few weeks and with the good weather and my boyfriends 21st I've been non stop since March.
So, what have I been making?

1st Anniversary..

I can't believe I've made it through a whole year in business!

(It's a cake- well it was for my boyfriends birthday this month last year, but we can pretend for this blog that it's to celebrate a year of being self employed and in business!)

I am so proud of what I have achieved in one year.. from starting out a little adventure making Memo Boards alone to move on and within a few short months have all these items created-

Bags, cushions, aprons, blankets, hanging hearts, not forgetting memo boards! And the ideas keep rolling and getting better (well I think they have, what do you guys think?)

A whole new world of sewing had been opening up to me and I am so grateful to everyone who has helped me through the past year of business- from my dad who helped me set up all my business accounts and came along with me to the bank to open a 'Business Account'... to my brilliant boyfriend, Nic who spends his weekend's off with me bossing him about asking for him to cut this shape out of wood for a new design (we even managed to draw and cut a tree at Christmas time, but he did all the hard work and then I couldn't even figure out a way to get the fabric to cover it haha!)

Thank you to my best friends- Lizzi, Jack and Kerry for being so supportive friends I could wish for and helping me out so much!

(Jack just likes to help when he visits so he can organise everything/ everywhere for me haha)

To all my customers and supporters-

I wouldn't keep doing this everyday if I didn't have the lovely customers I do! So a big thank you for all of your lovely comments, for placing orders and your photos once you have your orders..

Sunday makes!

I have a really long blog post I'm working on which takes you through the first year of my business, but in the mean while I'll update you all with what I've been making today!

So I had a few enquiries regarding Patchwork Quilts and Blankets.. at first I was thinking ahh the time they take to make and cost of materials, and the cutting of squares.. once I got everything together I have to say I haven't had such a good day making something in a long while! It was all so fun and exiting just guessing what to do along the way haha (I had a rough idea but winged it most of the time!)

So heres a few photos to show you the making of my sample patchwork blanket!

As its coming up to our 1st Birthday at Sweet Cotton Threads.. I'm having a MASSIVE sale filled with christmas stock and items which won't be part of the new range for SCT's!

I've put another tab up above this post where you can find Sale items- I'll be adding more and more, this Sale will last until all items have gone as I just don't have room for them (my studio space may be big for now but once I move it most definitely will not be!).

As you can all probably tell I've not been around much the past few weeks, I'm working on new collections for the site to launch towards April time which to give you a little hint will have full collections for each room in the home.

I will be including a lot of richer fabrics and tones to the 'family room' collection!

NEW FABRICS!

I couldn't resist buying some new fabrics when I saw them all yesterday! I've been avoiding all fabric shops, home ware stores etc, as every time I go in one I cannot help myself and feel the need to buy something for when I move out! Yesterday I got drawn to so many lush fabrics but only got a couple of metres of 3 of them...

I'm going to be busy working with these today coming up with new items for our website.. what do you think I'll have made by the end of the day? Comments below!

I know I'm not the only one who does this- so who puts their hands up to loosing their tea towels and running around like a mad man looking for it? Well a lovely lady emailed me asking if I could make something she had seen during the week and if I could make a girlie version, well I didn't like to say yes unless I knew it would all work once I'd made a mock up- so I made a sample..

A simple cotton tea towel made from pink and white striped fabric and a lush cupcake fabric for the tab part..

It's been a little while since I last had time to write a blog and now I have some free time as I've been rather lazy today and not got half of what I wanted to get done actually completed! Although I did finish off the small Valentines bunting I'l be putting up on the website tomorrow- I need to make some hearts to go along with the Valentines theme for the next two weeks!

Was still W.I.P at this stage (this is just so you can see the lettering much better!)

I couldn't get a very good photo in the lighting during the day so you need to enlarge the photo to see the 'i (heart) you' on the bunting- all lettering freehand by me on the machine.. first time in ages!

The last month seems to have gone past so quickly- 2011 always seemed so long away but now its here and its been a good start to the New Year for me and the business!

To update you all with my plans for 2011...

This year brings a lot of changes to my personal life and business.

As of June/July this year I will be living in a new town, moving out of home and will starting college all over again after a 2 year gap away from education in September. I'm only 20 and I really love my sewing so this is why I plan to keep my business running whilst at college. I'm going back to college to train in hairdressing (I felt REALLY old at my interview on Wednesday night, whilst everyone else in the room was 15 and still at school!) as I've always wanted to and feel its the right time to do it in my life. It is only 3 days a week so my here my plan of action as of September- I'll keep selling through the website and maybe Folksy (not too sure about Folksy yet- what do you all think of it? Do you buy or sell on there??) and then do custom orders on weekends- does this sound good to all you lovely customers out there? I really need feedback and would love it if a lot of you could leave me some comments below with your opinions (I need advice please!).

I've spent the last week doing up the website and today got this blog sorted! It needed a new look to go with the new look to the website- what do you guys think? A sneak peek of the website before I launch it live again tomorrow-

Small update

I'm getting very bad with blogging- in my defense I've been VERY busy. I've been redoing the whole of www.sweetcottonthreads.co.uk to launch it back up and running live at the end of this week with a post Christmas sale with mostly FREE postage. New items will be up next week once I've had a chance to make a few new boards and aprons etc.
I've got lots going on right now as I am applying to go back to college and moving to a different town all happening this year.. all will be revealed in time (well actually probably Wednesday night- keep your eyes peeled for that post).

NEW YEAR!

WOW! How fast does the year go? This time last year I was making the odd fabric item here and there for family an friends now I have my own business doing it full time and its not just my mum buying the items!

I've had a good two/three weeks off to spend time with family and friends whilst everyone's been home, but I've also been away to fix the website up a little and decide what direction Sweet Cotton Threads should go. I have decided (this decision is based on other business owners loosing facebook pages and that a lot will be changing for me this year-hopefully) that I won't be selling on facebook photo albums, I never really intended to sell through there to start with but it became a lot easier to upload a photo to facebook whilst trying to juggle everything else in the first year of setting up business.

This year I will be selling through our website and Folksy (I may add a tab to our facebook page for a shop as I had before but nobody took interest so I removed it- what do you think?). Not to worry I will still be taking custom orders through facebook and putting up photo albums of items on our website- this way if you have a question about an item you can still ask me. All you'll have to do now is it go through our website to buy items- its all the same, all through paypal as I would of done if you'd of bought from us via facebook. I will also be adding new items and ranges to our website to get it a lot more active again.

So much time, so little to do.. wait, reverse that!

Good evening!

Well preparations for Christmas are well under way in this household... no we don't have our Christmas tree up yet or any decorations but I'm getting there with the gifts!

I decided this year that I'd make both of our families their Christmas gifts and I love love love baking, along with sewing obviously! So on my planning list is truffles, cookies, gingerbread and lots of other treats! For the kids in the family I've done a sweetie jar for each of them to go with their big presents...

First I bought Jars and sterilised them...

Next job was to add sweeties, lots and lots of sweeties- making sure to steal one or two from the bags as I go...

Finishing touches...

Decorated with the tags.. but the jar didn't look so girlie...

A few dots later of pearl paint and it's looking much better!

TA DA! All 4 of my sweetie jars finished.. now just a few more jars to go (8 more big jars, 2 small ones and a whole load of baking and cooking.. along with a messy kitchen to go!)

I've also decided to make some candles, but seen as they take overnight to set I've only got 2 made so far, but need to add finishing touches but here we go...

Our last Christmas craft fair for today has been cancelled, so we have lots of Christmas stock which we would of been taking to fair with us.. but as its been cancelled this means MORE sale items for you lovely ladies out there!

Advent Calender...

This advent calendar has been hand stitched (the pockets) by myself and I would love for it to go for a new home! It's £25 with free postage for tonight only... I know that sounds a lot but please remember you can use this for years and years to come and it could become a tradition in your family to hang it up every year! Sooo, since I blogged last I've been none stop with orders and fairs! I've been to Birmingham for one and to Sheffield (in the snow.. drama drama drama!!) now just the Kirton in Lindsey one to go!

My dear best and oldest friend helped me out for the Sheffield event- thank you so so so much Kerry (your the best!!). We got up at 6am (well I was wide away from 4.30am when I started to weep a little as I looked out the window and saw SNOW! Not just a little.. ALOT! So we were on the road for 6.45am and made our way there slowly whilst driving in the snow at one point (may I add I do not drive and to be honest I was truly thankful it was not me driving as we would never have got there!!) We got there in plenty of time to set up and get the car parked for the day! Even though we had around 1.5 hours to set up I still managed to be unorganised and not get my table done in time.. but what can I say I like to make things to be just so!

Sorry for the bad photo... I managed to get my thumb covering half the photo's!

We moved the table around a lot during the day as we we're starting to sell the Memo Boards fast so ended up putting the basket from the floor on to the table which made our stand look much better!!

The day ended well despite the snow- we had a good time and made some money whilst having fun!

First Christmas Stall!

Ahh! What was I really panicking about for the past week for?! Friday came and I was so excited to show off some of our new makes to the public! I attended the St Mary's Ladies Pamper Evening, which was a really good night! Lots of people commented on how lovely our items were and we got to show them off finally in person!

I did end up moving it all around before everyone started coming in but didn't manage to get any photos! Lots of other stalls had Christmas items but ours were very bright compared to theirs! So what do you all think?

Our items went down very well with all the ladies who attended, its lovely for people to see your items in person and realise how much time and effort has gone into them and that you really can't get anything as lovely on the high street!

I've been MIA for about a week now! You may have seen a few update on facebook and a few sneaky photos but I just haven't been able to sit down and write a blog.

So where have I been? Well I've been trapped in my work space for more than 6-8 hours at a time and then I've only come out for a quick cup of coffee and off to back to sewing I go! I've had more orders than I expected of Christmas items, way more! So whilst I've been making them I've had time to squeeze in a few more items for the shopping evening which is this Friday night!!

Here's a few things I made quickly this morning to fill up my stock box for the fairs...

Padded, patchwork stockings, they turned out really well (sorry for the rubbish photo- a long story short I'm using my iPhone to take photos due to loosing my camera cable.. somewhere?!)

As I was ready to start working on some custom orders on Sunday I got a phone call from my Nana, asking if I'd go to hers for an hour to help her bake some cakes.. who can honestly turn there Nana away?! So I go up there thinking ah just an hour then I can get on with making stockings...

Several hours and cakes later I'm exhausted and come home to have a nap and got no orders made!

I will be sure to take lots of photos on Friday night of our first Christmas stall and put them up on Saturday for you all to have a peek at what we were selling!

Christmas is driving me slightly crazy!

Hello all!
I've been trying to get more and more Christmas stocking made and trying to do a million other things as once getting my orders done is getting harder, but I still manage to get them done and heres what I've been making this week...

A huge stocking for a little girl named Lillie May, I've made many items for her now but this is the sweetest one of all! I have also made a little fabric Christmas plaque with 'Santa Stop Here!' on it with green holly either side for the same family.

I'm thinking of added some Christmas Stock to my Folksy shop but wanted to get other's opinions on it first? Should I, shouldn't I.. Hmm let me know what you think!

I'm also taking Thursday until Sunday off this week to celebrate my birthday on Friday! Hopefully it will be a nice break before I come back to manic and mayhem to make lots more items for our first Christmas shopping evening on 12th November! Details will be up soon of the events we are doing over Christmas! We hope if many of you are in them areas you will pop along to see us!

I am slightly scared now that I am attempting to make 300+ individual items for the fairs and markets we have coming up over Christmas! Who else is making lots for Christmas this year? Oh and I also have said that I will make our families Christmas Presents this year! What have I put myself up for here! I've been so busy getting ready for the craft fairs/markets I'm doing in the 8 weeks running up to Christmas that I've not had time to show you all what I've come up with for our Sweet Cotton Threads Christmas Range (well more items anyway)...

New space to work in, winning fabrics and golden bowes.. SCT UPDATE TIME!

About time I updated you all properly about Sweet Cotton Threads now you all know about my holiday!
Well as soon as I got back from holidays I realise that the space I had been working in was getting to small so time to move to a bigger, brighter part of the house.. where better now the conservatory!

After years of the dining room being my beloved space to work in (since I was at school doing Art, my mum lost her dining room table lol!) I've now moved on in the crafting world so needed a new space to work in to go with it (if only I made enough money to have a proper studio, we will get there!)

So heres the new space...

It took me 2 whole days just to sort through fabrics I would use and then rest could go..

Mountains and Mountains of fabrics, this is just after 6 months of setting up business too hehe!!

But with my new found organisation skills the room is all set up with neat draws filled with my goodies to craft with...

I meant to tell you all about these before but had so many orders I didn't get chance to blog for a while, I got a bunch a freebies from Vista Print, including a table banner for craft fairs!

New sewing area!

I still have a few things to do like getting a big table in here so I don't have to cut out on the floor! Bad back is kicking in, getting old before my time having to sit on the floor half the day!

OH! Exciting news! I won a competition from Patch Fabrics!

How beautiful are these fabrics!! Lucky old me!

My sister decided she'd like me to make her a Memo Board for work so I was kind and let her choose any fabric she'd like and she was in love with all the fabrics I won!

I won't be around much this weekend as it is my Grandparents 50th Wedding Anniversary! So we've been getting lots of things done for that but will upload photos of things I am making for that (Buntings, bowes, A whole heap of stuff!)

Heres one bow that I've attempted, just a million more to go hehe!

HOLIDAY!

Ok so I've been away for 2 weeks on a holiday to get a little break from the sewing machine! Heres some holiday snaps for you all...

We stayed in a caravan, if you know me your'll realise me and caravans don't mix! (Ok so it was a static caravan all kitted out with a nice big TV, heaters, normal sized cooker etc but... I would rather be in a nice comfy bed in a hotel thank you!) So..Drama strikes within the first 3 hours of being there. I go to switch the last light off before bed and I see this tennis ball sized spider which was running for my hand.. so being the lovely girl I am I picked up my boyfriends trainer and killed it before it had a chance to attack me!!!

Although I did enjoy myself by the end of the week and was rather sad to be leaving Wales behind and the caravan (I did not enjoy cleaning up the caravan at 7am before we left though!)

So whilst I enjoyed my weeks off I did miss the Sweet Cotton Threads dearly and was pining for my sewing machine after the first week.

Since we got back I've been busy sewing, sewing and doing some more sewing! I've been trying out some new designs I've had drawn up for a while but figured I should probably wait until it got to September to start making Christmas items!

Oh and I also made this Memo Board for the lovely Jade when I go back on Sunday night...

Meet Anna Jackson, the designer behind the beautiful items at BlackCactusInLondon, based in South London.

How did you get started Anna
'I studied Printmaking at University in Australia and have started to become more attracted to textiles (much to the satisfaction of my mother who is a quilter) and I now hand print fabric. I mainly make the fabric into cushion covers with the aim to branch to other home ware items'

What do you enjoy making?
'I enjoy making shopper tote bags as I personally like to avoid using plastic bags from the shops. I feel guilty when I forget to bring one and find myself apologising to the shop keeper. I print the bags with my own designs (Peeved Rabbit is my favorite) but also like to recycle vintage fabrics, in keeping with the philosophy of the 'bag for life'

Who’s your inspiration?
'Everyone who I am seeing and meeting on the creative networks - all the people on Facebook, Twitter and forums are amazing; positive, supportive and endlessly creative! It's so good to know that you're not alone and that there's a sea of people out there on the same wavelength'

Anna has future plans for her small business, she will shortly have completed her website and she is moving into a new studio! Expect to see more new designs from her soon!

Have you always been creative?

'I've always been creative, I've always been found pulling things apart to recraft them, sewing, drawing/painting etc. I did an art course in college but found it eventually sucked my creative energy so decided to continue with A-levels'

Meet Badjacs!

A small but busy online business ran by Claire Ruscoe (one of the loveliest people you will ever stumble upon over the world wide web, she is nothing but supportive to all her fellow crafter's!). She designs and makes beautiful fabric pieces, which a lot of the time are bound to make you giggle or 'aww' at! Claire specialists in Nursery and Children's personalised gifts and accessories.

Claire hasn't been running her business very long but is already a hit with her Facebook fans at over 650 'likers'. She has always been creative, her Gran taught her to knit and sew at a young ages but she never pursued a creative job until now.

Day 25 Feature: Mossley Modelmaker

Meet Mossley Modelmaker

Meet Alan Tolfrey, the talented man behind this business. Based in Mossley, Greater Manchester. His work is amazing, I am still a little stunned after looking at his website and seeing how much talent he has. I was shocked, to say the least at how much his models look like the actual buildings and how much time and effort must go into each part of the models.

Alan individually hand builds each model and told me he is inspired by buildings and meeting people, this has been his hobby for over 40 years!
Alan has only been set up as business as of January this year after getting voluntary redundancy last September.

Have you always been creative and had creative jobs?

'Well, I suppose I have always been creative. Started with model railways then work got me interested in Town Planning and Architecture and just went on from thee. My family were all creative'

What are your future plans for your business?

I have enjoyed the last 6 months challenge of starting up this business - against so many people saying it wouldn't work. OK so I have to continually search for orders in the rather "niche" market while making the models (each can take up to a week to complete), but I love all the work it entails. Perhaps only managing 2 - 3 models a month (though I did manage 5 in July)!

Meet Marry Me Wedding Stationery!

Marry Me Wedding Stationery are based in Newcastle upon Tyne, which is a small family run business, Claire being the main creator of it all (with help from Hubby!)

They mainly do wedding stationery (invites, menu, rsvp etc) but can cater for ay occasion (as seen below in the next photo!)

This small handmade card business has only been set up online for 5 months but is looking to become big enough for Claire to leave her office job and become a full time creator of cards! Claire told me how she has always been creative and how her and her best friend used to make cards to one another when they kids! How adorable hehe, you were definitely meant to be in this profession, so I hope you can do it as a full time job ASAP as it's the best feeling in the world working for yourself!

Meet Emily Proctor, the creative soul behind ZaksJewel, a lovely woman who was inspired by her brothers courage. She is based in the depths of Hampshire where she creates Sterling Silver Jewellery, which she has been doing for around 10 years now and has never looked back! Emily is inspired by everything and everyone, she gets inspiration from all of the other talented people we have in this world (I've blogged about many of them hehe!).

Zaks Jewellery has been around since Emily started making jewellery but was only selling to family and friends also on Ebay. She has just opened her own website and now sells on Folksy! 'I have definitely always been creative. I never stopped drawing and making things. I'm also very musical and play the piano. I said when I started this new blog for Sweet Cotton Threads I wouldn't let anything get in the way of my '30 day feature challenge' and I would blog everyday (I thought I was superwoman!)... but when your trying to run a business on your own and your taking and making several orders a day by 11pm (especially when you've been up since 7am) the last thing you want to do is come on here and write a blog.. sadly my bed awaits me to curl up and snore my head of for the next 8 hours haha!

Anyway lets move on to a Sweet Cotton Threads update shall we!

So this past week alone I've made the following items-

AND a bunch of orders hehe! Which has actually been fun and I've really enjoyed this past week..

I made these cute little PE Kit Bags for a lovely lady named Helen, who has order from me before and I hope she is just as happy with these items as she was the last lot! (A future order I have from her is Kid's Aprons for her little girls for Christmas!)

Who loves the first ever peg bag I made this week? I think it's adorable! I love love love this material but only had enough left to make this sadly, may have to go buy some more as it is beautiful!

I thought these smaller bags with elasticated tops would be cute as nursery school bags, just something small for a little one to carry their toys in or even thought it could be used as a peg bag!

I made this whilst thinking I had nowhere to keep my perfumes without them getting in my way or me knocking them over, a perfect little bag to pop onto your bedside table to keep little things in!

Also this week I forgot to mention I went FABRIC SHOPPING! For a whole day! I was so excited to find all these new materials and fabrics! Which now explains why I have more new stock!

Meet Yasmin Corless, the business woman behind these beautiful hair accessories based in Wirral, Merseyside. Her handmade items are beautiful, girlie and I can't get enough of looking through all her gorgeous makes!

So explain what you make Yasmin...

'When it comes to the hair accessories that I make I have quite a broad range appealing to all different ages and styles, my favourite range I call my gaga range because its so just out there and mad, and I do think you have to be confident to wear them but they make a statement similar to Gaga herself, i also love pixie lotts style its simple and girly which you can see through the butterflys and and flowers I have in my collection, the designers that I love are Gareth Pugh, Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen, because they are outragous designs but so unique to their designer'

This small business only started up in April of this year and has progressed from selling at fair and Facebook to now selling to Beauty shops and Hairdressers!

Yasmin has always seen herself as a creative person when always looking for a job in the Art and Design Industry, she is currently an Illustration Student.

Yasmin hopes to have her website up and running by Christmas for you all to buy her lovely goodies from her!

Meet Eliedon!

This small business is ran by Jackie just outside of Sleaford in Lincolnshire (Just up the road from me, you need to pop round for a cuppa some time Jackie so I have someone to share my love for crafts with!!) Her business name is actually a gaelic type of heavenly place which is where Jackie feels she is whilst creating her jewellery and knitted accesories, which are so lovely!

Have you always been creative and how did your business started?

'I have been creating and making things for as long as I can remember. Both Grandmas and my mum are very creative people. Friends and family would see something and ask me to make it for them and I guess it just started from there'

Jackie only started selling and set up her business properly in February when a friend asked her to do a jewellery party! She then set up her website using Mr Site website package and selling online, Jackie now has her Jewellery for sale in two shops.

This small business is ran by Susan Rae Edmondson, who is based in Lancashire. She got started with making premature baby clothing when her grandson was born weighing only 4lbs 13½ ounces!
How long have you had your business Susan?
'I started out just over a year ago, however I never intended to run a business but after taking in several garments into the hospital for my premature grandson I was asked by several others if I would make items for their relatives premature baby's and so the seed was sown and Prem2Pram the online premature baby super store was born'
Who would you say your inspiration is?
'I would have to say Gok from Gok's fashion fix is my inspiration but my motivation comes from every premature baby born'

What is your favourite item to make?
'Oh that's easy it has to be the burp cloths because my son suffered Gastro oesophageal reflux and was always sicking up milk and I remember my shoulders were always covered in baby sick and let me tell you 'eau de baby sick' isn't a very becoming fragrance'

Meet Treacher Creatures!

This cute business is ran by Dawn Treacher, based in rural North Yorkshire, where all the sock animals get to play in trees and fields! All of the 'creatures' are one of a kind sock animals, along with single Edition Teddy Bears! Dawn got started over 10 years ago creating bears and from there it has expanded when a year a go she found a book on how to make sock creatures and hasn't stopped since!!

I've been BUSY!

You know when you think 'ah wouldn't it be nice to sit out in the sun and not have to worry..' well thats how all my days used to be but now Sweet Cotton Threads is taking off and we are having more orders than ever, which I am LOVING!!! I love love love making personal orders and it's lovely to sell items you have pre-made, this week I've been busy making these orders...

I've never made door signs before or done lettering on bunting so got to try new things this week which was nice! I think the bunting is the best set I've made so far! But let me all know what you think!

Isn't it just a lovely feeling when somebody says they actually like what you've come up with for them, I always have this dread in my mind of 'OH NOOO! What if they don't like what I've come up with' but I've had nothing but lovely feedback from customers so far, so lets hope it continues!!!

We had a 'Ladie's Evening' to attend for a local school last week (here's the photo's)...

I don't think I have much more to update on for Sweet Cotton Threads, but if I do I'll let you guys know!

Get to know MakeHQ!

Ran by Mel Greer-Walker and Zoe Buckney, teaching contemporary crafts in small groups e.g. sewing, knitting, crochet, cupcake decorating, bath and body products etc. Based in East Dulwich, London SE22. They also have Mobile MakeHQ where they will bring all their crafty loveliness to you for a private workshop! How great is that, you can enjoy it from your own home!!

So what's your story Mel and Zoe?

'Zoe and I met through an antenatal group when our first babies were brand new. We have always loved crafting and have been doing it in one form or another since we could first wield a needle. We both decided that we wanted a career that we were passionate about and that would also fit around our children, so MakeHQ was born at the beginning of 2010 (after much chatting, tea, cake and cooing over each others handiwork!)'

Who’s your biggest inspiration girls?

'Both of have to look to our grandmothers and mothers who not only taught us how to sew, knit, crochet, embroider, cook etc etc, but managed to do it all whilst bringing us and our siblings up, which, as we now know, can't have been an easy task!'

Have you both always been creative and had creative jobs?

'We have always been creative in our personal lives, and whilst Zoe is an actor and therefore very creative in her job, I am a City lawyer, so not at all. I've always had a (not so) secret hankering to be crocheting rather than conveyancing though!'

What are your future plans for your business?

'We are having a little "school" holiday for a few weeks over the summer whilst we work on our website and plan all our new courses, then we will be back in September with lots and lots of workshops. Some will be classics like A-line skirt making, more children's clothes, knitting and crochet, some seasonal for, say, Halloween and Christmas and of course there will be plenty of cake as ever. We plan to get everyone in our area making beautiful clothes, home accessories and Christmas gifts - homemade rocks!'

Get to know: The Suffolk Sewing School!

The Suffolk Sewing School is ran by Ann Haughton (photographed above with a lovely puppy,Molly). Suffolk sewing school is based in the heart of rural Suffolk in a beautiful village called Hartest. Hartest is exactly inbetween Bury St Edmunds and Sudbury just off of the A134.

Ann provides sewing tuition for all levels and abilities. Offering one to one tuition for soft furnishing, dressmaking, bag making, quilting, how to use and buy sewing machines and overlockers.

So how did you get started Ann?

'The sewing school was established as a business in October 2008 although I had been providing sewing tuition informally for the previous 2 years. At the time I was taking commissions for soft furnishings and simply became far to busy to accommodate any more business. So when a friend asked me to make a pair of curtains for her instead of turning the business away I suggested that we make them together. Quite simply this was the start of Suffolk Sewing School'

Have you always been creative Ann?

'I’ve always been passionate about fabrics and I love sewing machines. I’ve had a mixture of jobs from nursing to managing and working in Sewing machine outlets in London to medical sales. Now I feel like I have come home to my roots with the sewing school'

What are the most popular courses at the Sewing School?

'The most requested courses are the ‘how to use’ courses, either Overlockers or Sewing Machines. These are fundamental to making good items. My students leave understanding how their machine works, astounded at what it can do, with a good knowledge about the importance of using the correct needle for the fabric and raring to get started'

What's the future plans for Suffolk's Sewing School?

'I am currently amalgamating the Sewing School website with my fabric and haberdashery website. There is a temporary link being implemented at the moment whilst we import the data across. I hope to continue to grow the school and provide good quality haberdashery and soft furnishing fabric as well on the one site. I stock the Vanessa Arbuthnott range of fabrics for soft furnishings and I hope to focus on promoting these more'

Meet Minxy Bags!

This is a small business ran by Cécile in East Sussex. Her designs are beautiful and she makes limited series of hangbags and accesories. She uses a mixture of vintage and contemporary fabrics. I've been reading her blog since I got the email for this feature blog, it is a great read if you are a crafty person like myself and I love love lovee Cécile's passion for her new items!

Oh yes, I have always spent hours drawing and painting since I’m a kid. I have been sewing since my Degree, I believe it’s in my genes as my grandmother and aunt were both seamstresses. Unfortunately, after studies I had other priorities and like many of us, I had to work to live! But the passion never went away.

What are your future plans for your business?

I am working on my business to grow and I have started approaching shops so hopefully one will be happy to take my creations on board! I am also planning for the end of the year or the next to do a trade fair. And of course, keep on creating and sewing!

Meet Lucky Penny Creations!

This small business is ran by Katie Ottaway and Stacey Quinn and are based in Milton Keynes, home to the concrete cows! It all started when Stacey started making jewellery for herself and then her best friend Kate joined in and decided to start selling their items!

With such a young business thats only been going since May of this year you'd think not a lot people know of these girls jewellery but they already have over 150 fans on their facebook page!

This is my favourite set of earrings they have on sale, but they have much more on their facebook page!

Stacey and Katie are looking to the future of getting their business plans rolling by setting up a website to sell their items and attend more craft fairs!

Heartfelt Handmade is a small business ran by Marie Kitchen; its just her, a needle and thread and one big pile of felt! Marie and her big pile of felt are based in Hertfordshire. Just a quick hey from me seen as I've been doing all these features and haven't updated you all about Sweet Cotton Threads lately! I'll add photos tomorrow, but basically I've been out of the studio this week and have only been on the computer since wednesday onwards really since I got the flu last weekend and spend all weekend, Monday AND Tuesday in bed, so very sorry for not getting back to you all on them days! Well I've been thinking up new designs and have a lot of new sketches of items, may take some photos for you all to have a sneak peek at them!

Day 12 Feature: Vintage Chic

Meet Vintage Chic!

This small business has only been up and running for 9 months in the form of an online shop. The business is ran by Jackie, based in Essex. She makes vintage inspired handbags and jewllery, which are to die for!! I love them and can not get enough of all her pieces, if only I had all the money in the world!! Jackie started out her business with just handbags and has grown to develop her skills to offer us all beautiful vintage keepsake boxes and furniture.

Jackie told me how she wanted to sew like her mother and grandmother, so she started off with a few projects.
'Since doing an English degree, everything became academic, whilst I have always felt myself to be an artistic person so these projects helped me to stay creative. But soon enough I caught the crafting bug and its what I absolutely love to do now'

So Jackie what are the future plans for your little business?

I want to start making more vintage boxes and ornaments, as well as hopefully getting my own little boutique opened one day.

Meet Cards And Candles For All Occasions!

Cards And Candles For All Occasions is ran by husband and wife, Gordon and Laura Quick. They are based in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire. Their business became to form when they were planning their own wedding in 2004 and realised they could make everything themselves, looking just as profesional without the expensive price tags to go with it. Laura has progressed with her crafting and has a real talent, which she has now turned from her hobby into her living. Gordon has also turned his candle making hobby into a living with the both of them running a joint business which is Cards And Candles For All Occasion.

I love that Laura and Gordon can share their hobbies in crafting and have made a successful business from it. They are both very talented and show their skills off. Gordon also makes Dreamcatchers, which is photograhed above.

Laura, who's your inspiration?

'My dear Mum is definitely my inspiration and motivation. When my Mum was ill in hospital she was always telling everyone about the ‘wonderful cards her daughter makes’ and showing people the card that Gord and I had sent to her which helped to keep me motivated cos I felt like I had to keep going to tell Mum about our new ideas… when she passed away in 2007, I felt like giving up on everything but then I thought about how proud she was of what I was achieving with my cardmaking and crafting and new that I had to carry on, for Mum’s memory if nothing else, so on days where things don't seem to be going well I think of all the encouragement and positivity from Mum over the years and it always spurs me on'

Cards And Candles For All Occasions are hoping to include party plan and company 'Card and Candle Club' options in the near future, as well as looking to have their products stocked in retail outlets. They are also hoping to start a craft club/class in the future, so keep your eyes wide open for this lovely couple!!

Meet Must Destroy Jewellery!

This small jewellery business is ran by Clare in her spare time whilst having a full time job of being a nursery nurse. She is based in a little town in Essex called Grays.
MustDestroy Jewellery make anything from necklaces and earings to keyrings and badges!

How did you get started?
'I started making stuff for myself - I could never find the jewellery I wanted in shops - and if I could it would cost a small fortune! - so I just started making my own. Interest grew and the rest is history!'

Clare takes her inspirations from tattoo artists which include the old traditional style tattoes by Sailer Kerry and more modern art work of Vince Ray. Her small business has grown over three years and sells online and occasionally hosts jewellery stalls at events.

I love Clare's Jewellery for it's true induviually and there really isn't any other handmade jewllery out there like this, she really does make one of a kind pieces! I love her inspiration and spirit in all her creations and I wish you the best of luck with your business in the future!
